After a closely contested, low scoring first half, El Modena’s football team pulled away with three touchdowns in the third quarter to defeat El Dorado 29-9 Thursday night in a non-league game at Fred Kelly Stadium.
El Modena is 4-0 entering Friday’s final non-league matchup at home with Trabuco Hills (3-1).

El Modena led 5-3 at halftime after a field goal by Alejandro Teran-Martinez in the first half and a safety before breaking the game open in the second half.
“Offensively, we just didn’t get the ball in that first half,” El Modena Coach Matt Mitchell said. “The second half, we came out and got a big play to start off and get the momentum going. And our defense played well tonight.”
El Modena was led by quarterback Ethan Sorenson who completed 11 of 17 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns, according to stats from El Modena football. Sorenson also rushed for 82 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown.
Sorenson used a quarterback sneak for a touchdown, extending the Vanguards’ lead to 19–3 with 3:24 left in the third quarter.
Jason Ramos was the Vanguards leading receiver with six catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
Teran-Martinez made two field goals and all three PAT attempts for El Modena.
El Modena’s defense was also strong. Hayden Esparza had eight tackles including three tackles for a loss and one intercetion; Aiden Sullivan had seven tackles, Daniel Mendez five tackles and a sack and Chris Cordova five tackles.
El Dorado (2-2) was led by junior quarterback Hudson Shaddow who completed 22 of 37 passes for 254 yards and one touchdown, according to stats from El Dorado football. He hooked up on a 70-yard strike to Justin Karg in the fourth quarter. Ryan Lema had a field goal for El Dorado which gave the Hawks an early lead in the second quarter.
“You can’t go against a team like that and have self-inflicted wounds,” El Dorado Coach Zack LaMonda said. “We can’t make mistakes against a good, well-coached team and expect to win. So hopefully we can learn from it.”
Karg caught five passes for 124 yards.
