After coming close last year, Segerstrom’s girls soccer team was on a mission to bring home a CIF title.
The Jaguars did just that Friday night, defeating Orange Coast League rival Ocean View 4-0 in the CIF Division 6 final at Ocean View.

Segerstrom lost in the semifinals last year and in 2014. This was the Jaguars first trip to the finals.
Freshman Aymar Salgado headed in a corner kick in the 29th minute to put the Jaguars ahead 1-0. She had another goal in the second half and teammates Isabella Barrera and Jewel Orellana each had a goal to lead the Jaguars.
Goalkeeper Isabel Valdivia recorded the shutout for Segerstrom (15-2-4) with help from a strong defense. Segerstrom captured the league title with Ocean View finishing second.
“We were so close last year,” said Segerstrom Coach Diego Aguirre. “We played with a chip on our shoulder … and now that we have all these girls back, along with our youth and experience, we got two goals from a freshman and one from a sophomore. We’re just very excited, we’re super excited.”
Segerstrom, which allowed only one goal in the playoffs, was again stellar on defense against Ocean View (13-7-3).
“Our two captains are back on the defense, Danielle Dominguez and Jazmin Corcino, since day one, they put the emphasis on what we were going to do with all the girls, everybody plays defense, everybody plays offense so it’s everybody’s responsibility and they did a great job of promoting that all season. That’s why we got here to this point along with our goalkeeper. It was really tough because both goalkeepers are good, but we made a decision going with {Isabel Valdivia} and she did a great job,” Aguirre said.
Salgado was thrilled to play a big part in the victory.
“I feel really amazing, those two goals were really unexpected,” she said. “I’m so happy to be here, I’m so happy to win this game with my team. They really uplifted me. That first goal was insane, that was my first header ever. I was so surprised.”
Salgado also praised the head coach and her teammates.
“We have a lot of fun, we know when to be serious, we know how to focus, I really love this team, we went through a lot,” she said.
Ocean View Coach Shane Palmer remained upbeat after the match.
“I was super proud of them, as was quite obvious, we were super injured, players trying to play injured and they toughed through it and fought through the very end,” he said. “But nothing bad to our opponent, it was a fair game, we just had bad luck with injuries and they outplayed us.”
Ocean View was without its leading scorer, senior Marisa Vo, who was sidelined with an injury, Palmer said. Vo had hoped to be ready for the final.
Ocean View went through a winless season last year, so the the coach was proud of how his team bounced back this season to reach the finals.
Both teams are headed to the CIF So Cal regionals next week.
