Olive Orange and Placentia Pony Bronco 12-and-under baseball teams both captured victories Saturday in the super regional tournament at Santana Regional Park in Corona.
The two teams, both 2-0, meet Sunday at 2 p.m. The 16-team double elimination tournament runs through Tuesday. Three teams from the tournament move on to the zone tournament, which includes the top eight teams in Southern California for 12-and-under.
OLIVE ORANGE 13, PACIFIC PALISADES 4: Enrique Triana had two doubles and two singles to lead the Olive Hurricanes, according to Manager Shea Shandra. Victor Ayala had a triple and a single, Austen Shandra had a single and was hit by a pitch two times, Alexander Velasco had three singles with two RBI and Caleb Helm had a single with two RBI for Olive, which had 17 hits.
“It was a good day for Olive hitters, but once again Victor Ayala threw the daily maximum of 85 pitches for five innings,” Shea Shandra said.
Ayala had seven strikeouts and allowed two earned runs while walking just one. Triana threw the last two innings to secure the victory.
Olive opened the tournament with a 14-2 victory over Jurupa Friday night.
PLACENTIA 15, WEST COVINA 0: The Punishers notched their second straight shutout of the tournament Saturday.
Beckham Mahoney and Caden Petler combined to throw a one-hit shutout. according to Manager Nick Nunnari. Adrian Rosales and Jeremiah Peterson each had 4 RBI and each had a triple. Leadoff batter Oliver Rojas scored three runs for Placentia, which had 14 hits over four innings.
“Beckham and Caden pitched very well and were able to shut down a good offense,” Nunnari said. “I thought our defense played great and on offense we swung the bats well. This was a big win for us to stay in the winner’s bracket.”
