Century High School’s football team, under veteran head coach Lance Neal, continued to make progress Thursday night, defeating Azusa 42-14 in a non-league game at Citrus College.
The Centurions are off to a 3-0 start.
“Our staff is really proud of all of our players for battling through some adversity and finishing the game strong,” Neal said Friday.
In Thursday’s win, Century rushed for 316 yards and scored six touchdowns on the ground, led by Noe Najera (11 carries for 116, three touchdowns) and Derek Carillo (8 carries for 86 yards, two touchdowns), according to offensive coordinator Kevin Nichols.
“Interceptions by Derek Lemus and Ramon Toribio, plus a strip and fumble recovery from Derek Carrillo, were our highlights defensively, Nichols said.
The Century program has struggled the past five years, recording two wins overall. This year’s team already has more wins than the 2018 team which had two victories.
Century plays at Bolsa Grande (0-1) Friday night Sept.13.
