El Dorado coach Ryan Mounce meets with his players during a timeout Tuesday.
El Dorado’s boys basketball team started off fast and controlled most of the rest of the game Tuesday night, notching a 61-49 victory over Woodbridge in the second round of the So Cal Elite Gary Raya Classic at Woodbridge.
Shaun Turner scored 24 points and Jake Polling scored 23 points to lead the Hawks who jumped to an 11-2 lead and led 18-13 after one quarter.
“We came out ready to play tonight and we hit some shots,” said El Dorado Coach Ryan Mounce. “Jake Polling hit some shots early. We were without one of my starters, Riley Tomita (knee injury) my point guard so we’ve been really resilient the last couple of nights.”
Mounce was pleased his team was able to bounce back from a 48-42 loss to Corona del Mar in the tournament opener Monday at El Dorado.
“We lost last night to CdM, and I’m just trying to get guys to stay present and be mindful of it. It’s a long tournament with a lot of good teams in it so dwelling on the past isn’t going to help.
“My kids are reslient, they can take a few on the chin and come back.”
El Dorado (6-4) maintained a 37-26 halftime lead and although Woodbridge hung in during the second half, the slow start hurt the Warriors (3-5).
Jackson Rain led Woodbridge with 18 points and four 3-pointers but he was the only Warrior scoring in double figures.
“We dug ourselves a hole early, we were not focused, we weren’t ready to play and El Dorado was,” said Woodbridge Coach John Halagan. “Coach Mounce had his guys prepared and ready to play. They lost a tough game last night against Corona del Mar and they just came in with a little edge.
“They just got into us. They went up 10 quick and we just did not play well. El Dorado certainly had something to do with it. I don’t want to take anything away them. They played a solid game. We got it down to nine a couple times. Obviously, I thought Jackson Rain was our best player tonight on the offensive end. He always plays with an edge and he was ready to play.
“I was also pleased with our freshman center Nygle Wiliams. He came in and gave us some length and some physicality and had a couple finishes around the rim. But for the most part, we were just a step slow tonight and they were getting most of the loose balls.”
