Rosary defeats Beckman to win silver division championship at Alan Dugard Classic

Rosary High School’s softball team got off to a great start in the championship game of the silver division at the Alan Dugard Classic Saturday at Deanna Manning Stadium.

Rosary scored four runs in the first inning and went on to capture a 9-3 victory over Beckman to take home a championship trophy.

“Going 4-1 and having a great couple weekends is really nice; we sandwiched that around a great league win, so it’s been a good eight days for us definitely,” said Rosary Coach Tom Tice.

Rosary (10-7) took command in the top of the first inning, using three hits, two walks, a wild pitch and an error to score four runs. Anahi Pintado came through with a squeeze bunt to drive in the first run. Annalise Adamsen also had an RBI single in the inning and two more runs scored on an error.

Beckman (10-8) responded in the bottom of the second inning with three runs, two coming home on a single by Katelyn Park. Alyssa Pathchen scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a fielder’s choice.

But Sarah Quiros came on in the second inning of Rosary starter Derian Cardenas to shut down Beckman the rest of the way, scattering three hits and striking out two.

“She did great,” Tice said of Quiros. “She probably would have started the game but she was in right field for the last game and we ended up playing all seven innings so she didn’t have a chance to warm up for game two.”

Brianna Salazar had an RBI double, Danica Silvestri an RBI triple and Gianna Serano a squeeze bunt single in the fourth inning to help Royal move out to a 7-3 lead. The Royals added a run in the sixth and seventh innings.

Silvestri led the way offensively for the Royals, going 3 for 5 with three runs scored and an RBI.

“Danica is college-signed, she’s going to Fairfield University and she was our catcher the first game and center field the second game, so she kind of does everything for us,” Tice said.

Tice and his players were presented medals and the division championship trophy after the game by tournament director Jerry Rose, Woodbridge softball coach.

Rosary won its first game over Edison 2-1. Pintado aqueezed home Silvestri in the bottom of the seventh inning for the game winner. Beckman defeated Woodbridge 11-2.

The tournament had champions for the gold, silver and bronze divisions.
