Woodbridge High School’s girls flag football team went through the Pacific Coast League season undefeated to capture the inaugural league championship in the first CIF-sanctioned season of the sport.
Woodbridge (23-2, 12-0) finished league play with a 26-0 victory over University Monday. The Warriors had eight shutouts in league.
“We won league going undefeated,” Woodbridge Coach Mark Thompson said. “There are really talented teams in our league with great athletes. We had to battle through some tough games, especially with Beckman, University and Northwood. Â
“Our motto this season was ‘hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.’ Woodbridge prides themselves in working hard at every practice and film session. That hard work paid off as we gained momentum throughout the pre-season highlighted by winning the SoCal Showcase, beating Newport (Harbor) in the finals.
“Our captains Teagan Burrus Milan Heisdorf and Emily Harris were instrumental in the team’s success by motivating and leading them to get better every day. Tori Zebko and Zoey Ceman were also standout players on both sides of the ball making critical plays all season long. They are a real special group with great chemistry who love to have fun and play football. It was an amazing season.”
The league is having a post-season tournament this season. The quarterfinals were Tuesday and the semifinals and finals will be Thursday at Laguna Hills High School.
Woodbridge and University will play at 5:30 p.m. and Northwood will meet Beckman at 6:30 p.m.
The winners from those games will play in the championship at 7:30 p.m.
CIF playoffs are not being held this year, but more schools are expected to field teams next year which would make CIF playoffs possible.
