Top-seeded Uni boys soccer team opens with home win in CIF State Division IV playoffs

Top seed University captured a 4-2 win over No. 8 seed Animo in the first round of the CIF Division IV So Cal Boys Soccer Championships Tuesday at home.

It was a tale of two halves with the University Trojans controlling the first half.

In the fourth minute, junior Arya Tayaranibeegham scored his second goal of the season on a half volley. In the 18th minute, Pavlos Mikhael scored his sixth goal of the season off a beautiful pass from Kasra Ghoddousi (his 10th assist of the season).

In the 26th minute Bradley Son stole the ball and slotted the ball in the goal with his left foot from a tight angle. Junior Hector Jessen scored his second goal of the season with a minute to go before the half to give the Trojans a seemingly a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Four minutes into the second half under a full moon, Animo got on the board with a goal from Darian Cruz. Three minutes later, an Animo shot was deflected off the crossbar by goalkeeper Lucca Clouthier.

In the 66th minute, Animo sophomore Ethan Mendoza made it 4-2 on a 30-yard free kick. Three minutes later another Animo shot struck the woodwork. Clouthier kept the Trojans in the game making seven saves, five in the second half.

Animo of Inglewood finishes the season with a 19-8-6 record. University (16-5-1) and moves on to the regional semifinals with another 5pm home game vs Chatsworth Thursday at 5 p.m. at Uni.
