Woodbridge High School’s baseball team improved its overall record to 2-1 with an 8-0 non-league victory over Tustin Wednesday night at Ryan Lemmon Stadium.
Anthony DeMarco, Justin Durby and Brandon Abernathy combined on a 1-hit shutout. DeMarco pitched the first four innings, allowing no hits and striking out eight. Durby pitched two innings allowing one hit and striking out two and Abernathy finished out with a scoreless seventh.
“Anthony DeMarco pitched extremely well for us in his varsity debut on the mound,” said Woodbridge Coach Ryan Brucker. “He was very efficient and commanded the zone for four straight innings. We are very happy with our pitching and defense through these first trhree games.
“Justin Durby has thrown in relief in every game and done an outstanding job as well. On offense, seniors Chase Quezada and Brandon Abernathy set the table for us, and came through with some big hits.”
Quezada was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI and DeMarco and Alex Serafin had two RBI. Jacob Perez and Matthew Kuromoto each scored two runs for the Warriors, who had five hits.
Woodbridge opens Pacific Coast League play Saturday at University at 11 a.m. The Pacific Coast League is now an eight-team league with the addition of Sage Hill so league play is beginning earlier and will include some Saturday games.
Woodbridge is the defending league champion.
“We are trying to get better each game, and look forward to opening up Saturday with a tough University team,” Brucker said.
