University High School’s football team has been making progress during the summer under first-year coach Vincent Mesa. Mesa, a former Orange Coast College assistant coach, was hired earlier this month to replace Chris Hernandez.
The Trojans open the season on Thursday, Aug. 26. vs. Magnola at Uni.
“Uni football has been making great strides with the new program,” Mesa said Tuesday.
Mesa said the players have been working hard, “every day in the weight room and on the field. Our numbers were very low at the beginning of the month but have since grown tremendously and grows by the day. “
Mesa will be looking to the seniors to help the team succeed.
“Our team has some key upper-class returners, but we are mostly a young team this year,” Mesa said. “We will look to our seniors Noah Scherson, Dominic Bejanaro, Joe Cameron and Christian Ortiz to lead and mentor our team this year.”
