Segerstrom High School’s boys basketball team, under first-year coach Eddie Andrade, will be out to secure the outright Golden West League championship with a victory over Katella Tuesday night at Katella.
Segestrom (12-11, 7-1) clinched at least a share of the title with a 56-45 victory over Garden Grove on Friday. The Jaguars wrap up the league season hosting Godinez Thursday at 7 p.m. Godinez (10-16, 4-4) is the only team to defeat Segerstrom in league play so far.
Katella (15-9, 5-3) needs to win both of its remaining games and Segerstrom has to lose its final two in order to share the league title. Katella finishes league play Thursday at Ocean View.
Segerstrom’s only league title in boys basketball came in 2011, according to Athletic Director Nick Canzone.
“We clinched a share of the league title,” Andrade said before Tuesday’s game. “We need to win today for us to fully win it.
“It’s a great feeling to have this success my first year. I couldn’t be more happy with the way the players have grown from the first day I met them. They have worked really hard and deserve all the recognition for this success. I’m hoping we can go into the CIF playoffs with some momentum.”
Segerstrom has been led in league play by seniors Chris Negrete, who is averaging 13.5 points and six rebounds a game; Isiah Velasquez, who is averaging 12.3 points; Jalen Cervantes, who is averaging 6.3 points and five rebounds and Shawn Murray, who is averaging 7.5 points a game.
Juniors Christopher Arteaga, who is averaging seven rebounds a game and Heber Quero, who is averaging five assists a game, have also contributed to the Jaguars’ success.
