High school football season is about two months away but Segerstrom and La Quinta continued to build the foundation Tuesday in a summer league passing game.

No scores were kept but both Segerstrom coach Joseph Tagaloa and La Quinta Coach James Stewart seemed pleased with what their teams accomplished during the game.
Each team had a series of offensive repetitions and the game was played with two-hand touch rules during the one-hour scrimmage.
“It went well, any time we can get out here and get some looks from opposing teams always helps us out in the long run,” Tagaloa said. “My cousins are part of the Fairmont staff so it was nice of them to come out and give our JV (team) some work. Coach Stewart at La Quinta has always been a good guy and he brought his guys out here.
“It’s a learning experience and we can actually take time to coach.”
Segerstrom was without its starting quarterback Angel Vega who was at a passing camp at Notre Dame. Andrew Contreras and Frankie Gonzales handled the passing duties for the Jaguars.
“They did well and they both made some really good throws and hit some tight windows,” Tagaloa said. “It shows that we are pretty deep at the quarterback position. It’s nice that we have someone behind Angel that’s going to push Angel to get better.”
Stewart, who led La Quinta to a 4-6 record last year, believes the experience from Tuesday will help his team.
“For us, it’s the beginning of our summer, so I can’t complain about our effort,” he said. “We’re not perfect, but we got some work in. Segerstrom is a great program and for us to come down and compete against them helps us out for the season.”
La Quinta used three quarterbacks, Jayden Clark, Andrew Rumble and Richard Huynh.
“They did a great job so the competition continues,” said Stewart.
The players seemed to enjoy the competition too.
“Today was a good day today,” said Segerstrom’s junior wide receiver Anthony Gomez, expected to once again be one of the Jaguars’ top receivers after hauling in seven touchdown catches and handling the placekicking duties last year.
“I could have gone a little bit harder, but I still went my hardest today. This year, I know we’re going to be doing big things. We’re going to accomplish a lot.”
Senior wide receiver Iverson Fuiava, another standout receiver, is looking forward to the season too. He’s hoping to break the receiving records he set last season in receiving yards and touchdowns.
He said a number of returning players should help the Jaguars.
“(We’re looking) pretty good,” he said.
