Records fall as UCI men’s basketball team rolls past Bethesda 135-55 in home opener

It was a record-setting night for UC Irvine’s men’s basketball team Saturday night in the Anteaters’ home opener.

UC Irvine rolled to a 135-55 victory over Bethesda. No fans were allowed to attend because of safety regulations related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Anteaters set school records in the most points ever scored (135), the largest margin of victory (80), field goals made (56) and assists (31).

The Anteaters 80-point margin of victory is also the most in Big West Conference history. UCI also tied a Bren Events Center record with 70 first half points. UCI also set a Bren Center record for field goal percentage (.691).

UCI was led by Austin Johnson, who scored 20 points and made 9 of 9 field goal attempts. He also grabbed 16 rebounds.

Freshman DJ Davis had a career high 18 points and five assists while Andre Henry had 17 points and five assists. JC Butler (14 points) and Jeron Artest (13 points) each had career-highs.

Gabriel Bazile led Bethesda (0-3) with 15 points.
