Portola girls flag football team knocks off Woodbridge in league showdown

Portola’s girls flag football team moved into a tie for first place in Pacific Coast League play with a 20-12 victory over Woodbridge Wednesday at Woodbridge.

The Bulldogs (18-2, 8-1) battled back from a 12-0 deficit to win their 14th game in a row.

“Our freshman quarterback Chelsea Wong really stepped in and made a difference with touchdowns from Joey Nesland, Sophia Reyna and extra points from Amelia Atchison,” said Portola Coach Julie Primero. “Camden Everett had consistent plays on offense and Arianna Diaz had a big interception late in the game to seal the win.”

Joey Nesland had two touchdowns and one extra point for Portola.

“Portola came into the game on a 13-game winning streak, so they had momentum,” said Woodbridge Coach Mark Thompson. “They are a good team and very well coached. We went up on them by two scores before they eventually scored just before the half. They made adjustments and held us out of the end zone in the second half while scoring two more times to win the game.”

Woodbridge (13-7, 8-1) was led by Loghan Everette, who was the Warriors’ leading receiver with eight receptions. Quarterback Delia Stone threw both touchdowns for the Warriors.

Thompson has been pleased with how his team has been playing.

“The season has been a good one so far,” he said. “As with everyone else, we had to adjust to the new rules and I feel that our team has done that quite well.”
