Head coach Peter Abe talks to some of his players Monday night.
Portola’s football team was back on the field Monday afternoon preparing for its first varsity football game on Friday, Aug. 17 against Fairmont Prep at Portola.
“We are where we were even at the beginning of the spring and summer,” said Coach Peter Abe. “We’re excited to get out there and see what our kids can do. Everybody is excited to kind of get that first game behind you, being that it’s going to be everybody’s first varsity competition.”

“I think a scrimmage (last week) was a big learning experience,” Abe said. “Everybody went out there and said, ‘this is a lot faster than JV football.’ We want to take those learning experiences and make those adjustments and try and play better every week.”
Abe said that Fairmont Prep is “pretty senior heavy and they have some guys coming back that are pretty good, so we’re definitely going to have to play disciplined, sound football. Otherwise, at any moment, they got guys who can take it to the house.”
