Corona del Mar’s baseball defeated Capo Valley Christian 10-1 Thursday afternoon behind another outstanding effort from sophomore pitcher Stevie Jones (3-1).
Jones pitched 6 1/3 innings striking out 15 allowing only one hit. The only hit came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jake Winn came in to throw the final 2/3 of an inning striking out two for the Sea Kings.
The Sea Kings (6-2) banged out 10 hits led by Brady Gadol and Dillon Lane who each had two hits.
Gadol was 2 for 3 with a single and triple, one RBI, two walks and two runs scored. Lane, the catcher, was 2 for 4 with an RBI, one run scored, and a walk. Jones was also 1 for 2 at the plate with an RBI, two runs scored, and two walks.
“Watching Stevie and catcher Dillon Lane work together this afternoon was special,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey. “We played a really good CVCS team and to strike out 15 says a lot about how Stevie was throwing today.
“I am really proud of this team. They are coming together as a team and pulling for one another. I asked for some help before school to pull tarps in an effort to dry out the field so we could play today. All 16 of the varsity players showed up to help work on the field before school. Most of the boys don’t have a first period and they still showed up to do the work as a team.
“The boys left for school covered in mud. We would not have been able to play today if it wasn’t for their hard work this morning. We preach the idea of Lead By Example and to see the boys take leadership roles and come together as a team is pretty special.”
