Fletcher Huss scored twice and Ryan Maturo threw two touchdown passes as Troy overwhelmed Sonora 35-7 Friday night in a Freeway League football game at Fullerton High School.

While Troy played nearly a flawless game, Sonora, trying to bounce back from a last-second loss to Fullerton a week ago, had little go its way until finally finding the end zone with 18 seconds to play.

The only thing that went well for the Raiders was a win on the pre-game coin toss. The Raiders got the call and deferred, choosing to kick off.

Troy ran two plays, the second being a 53-yard Maturo pass to Aydan Corrales, and the Warriors were ahead 7-0, 19 seconds into the game.

Huss added a 22-yard TD run at 3:36 and the Warriors (6-2, 2-1) were up 14-0 after one quarter.
Huss scored again less than two minutes into the second period and Maturo threw a 11-yard scoring pass to Vander Ploog and it was 28-0 at the break.

At the same time Sonora was struggling to get anything going its way. In the first half the Raiders had an interception and lost a fumble when the center snap hit a Sonora player in motion. When the Raiders first reached the end zone in the third quarter, the play was nullified for an illegal receiver down
field.

Troy spent little time on what had just transpired on the field, however, and began immediately focusing on its upcoming “City Tournament.”

That’s for recognition as the best football team in Fullerton. That “tournament” has been dominated by Sunny Hills for the past four seasons, but Troy players and coaches think their team has the team to crown a new king.

The tournament is based on the outcome of games between Troy, Fullerton and Sunny Hills.

The Warriors play Sunny Hills Friday and then wrap up their regular season on Friday, Oct. 28 with a game at Fullerton.

Next up:

On Friday, Sunny Hills (3-5, 2-1) is at Troy (Homecoming); Sonora (5-3, 2-1) visits La Habra (6-2, 3-0).
