Segerstrom High School’s football team was clicking on all cylinders Thursday night in the Big Four League opener vs. Katella, rolling to a 64-0 victory at Glover Stadium.
“We came into last night’s game with a different mentality,” Coach Joseph Tagaloa said Friday. “We knew it was the league opener, but it was more than that. We put some much pressure on our guys to make plays that they really didn’t have a choice.]
“Because we have been down several key players for the majority of the season, a lot of our two’s and three’s have been pushed into the starting role. Tonight we saw those guys step up and play a tremendous game for all four quarters.Â
“Offensively we were fortunate to get multiple guys going which allowed for several big scoring plays. Jonathan Acevedo got the scoring started for us and we never looked back. Jesse Lopez connected with Nick Cervantes, Andrew Diaz, and Ayden Morales for touchdowns. Our rushing attack was led by Isaiah Valdivia, with Sedrick Beamon and Miguel Nava breaking off long touchdown runs.”

The defense by the Jaguars (5-3, 1-0) was also tough, Tagaloa said.
“Defensively our goal is to get 11 guys to the ball and last night we were able to do that. Collectively we forced several turnovers with Abraham Ruiz finishing off the night with a fumble recovery for a touchdown,” Tagaloa said. “All our guys got quality snaps throughout the night, but it was our defensive front that led the charge. They stayed active and controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the night.
“Our special teams played well all night. Anthony Ruiz stepped up for us and made all of his extra points and field goal attempts.”
Segerstrom’s next league game is Thursday at Garden Grove.
“We now have to get ready for a tough Garden Grove team,” Tagaloa said. “They always come prepared to play so we must do the same.”
Katella (1-7, 0-1) plays Marina Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at Glover Stadium.
