Irvine High School’s football team evened its overall record at 1-1 with a 24-19 victory over Portola Friday night at Irvine Stadium. Portola, coached by Peter Abe, dropped to 0-2.
Brandon “Figgy” Figueroa led Irvine with had 168 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. His longest gain was 65 yards. Â Deacon Moss and Diego Monteczuma each had a TD for Irvine.
“Overall, a good back-and-forth type of game against a well coached Portola team,” said Irvine Coach Tom Ricci.
The late legendary Irvine football coach Terry Henigan was honored with a moment of silence at the beginning of the game.
“Both teams came out to the hashmark to show respect,” Ricci said. “I’m happy with the way our guys played. We are improving week to week.”
