“Just a super intense high school baseball game,” said Beckman Coach Kevin Lavalle. “We played really well, they played really well. I think there was a point where we all thought that it was going to be a marathon, extra inning affair, but I’m glad it ended the way it did. They were an excellent team.”
Beckman, the No. 2 team from the Pacific Coast League, won the game in the eighth inning when Zach Ireland drew a bases loaded walk-off walk with two outs. Connor Perea scored the winning run and the Patriots celebration began with players pouring out onto the field for a dogpile.
Ireland pitched seven innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Rex Jarcy pitched a scoreless eighth inning to get the win and improve his record to 8-2. Jonathan Reece pitched for Temescal Canyon, allowing one hit in 7 2/3 innings.
Temescal Canyon, the No. 2 team from the Ivy League, finished with a 14-14 record.
The winner of the Beckman vs. La Habra game advances to the quarterfinals Friday against the winner of the Newbury Park-Summit game. Summit is the No. 2 seeded team in the division.
