Orange County high school baseball highlights, final scores for Wednesday, April 8

PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE

WOODBRIDGE 17, UNIVERSITY 4: Woodbridge scored seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back topping University on the road 17-4 Wednesday.

The teams came into the game in a four-way tie for second place. Woodbridge moved into a tie for first place in the league with the win.

The Warriors (9-10, 5-2) opened the scoring courtesy of a run on a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error. Designated hitter JJ Metcalf followed with a two-run double to give Woodbridge a 3-0 lead before the Trojans (6-8, 4-3) came to the plate.

Woodbridge ace starting pitcher Vincent DeMarco struck out the side in the bottom of the first and pitched a total of three hitless innings while fanning seven hitters earning his second victory on the season.

Woodbridge followed with four runs in the second inning on a grand slam by Metcalf, who finished with seven RBI in the game.

Already up 7-0, Woodbridge broke the game open with an eight spot in the third inning highlighted by a three-run homer by Kyle Underwood. In addition, infielder Henry Uhrik had two hits and scored four runs while left fielder Ari Firestone also had two hits.

University was held hitless through five innings and was able to score four runs on just a single hit in the sixth inning. Sophomore third baseman Lucas Haun broke up the no hitter with a line single to right. Seniors Sean Maher and Daisuke Ho each had hits for University in the seventh inning.

The teams play again Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Ryan Lemmon Stadium.

IRVINE 8, PORTOLA 2: Irvine (8-10, 5-2) captured a win Wednesday at Irvine against Portola, which came into the game on top of the league standings. Irvine and Portola are now in a four-way tie for first place.

“We struggled a little early on defense, but Matthew Sandoval was excellent once again on the mound,” said Irvine Coach Gabriel Cota.

Sandoval pitched six innings with 67 pitches and gave up one earned run for Irvine.

“He pitches to contact and trusts his defense,” Cota said.

Jason Alderson threw in the seventh inning and allowed one hit while striking out two.

Roshan Patel was 2 for 3 with a double and four RBI, Owen Song was 2 for 4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI; Jack Dressendorfer was 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base and Smith Spivey was 1 for 1 with a triple, walk and stolen base. He was also hit by a pitch.

Irvine plays at Portola (6-6, 5-2) Friday at 3:30 p.m.

CRESTVIEW LEAGUE

VILLA PARK 8, EL DORADO 4: The Spartans (12-6-1, 3-2) were led by Jack McGuire, who got the win allowing one run and two hits in five innings. He also struck out three. Owen Dunne was 1 for 2 with a run scored, a double and two RBI, Ezra Ornelas 2 for 2 with three runs scored, Jordan Laird 1 for 3 with an RBI and Gunner Santillio 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.

CYPRESS 14, LA HABRA 3: League leading Cypress (14-4, 4-0) was led by Nick Nelson who pitched five innings, allowing three runs and striking out four.

Jake DeLaquill was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Gary Hennessy 3 for 6 with three runs scored and three RBI, Tyler Vladic 2 for 5 with three RBI, Dylan Keliholaki 2 for 4 with an RBI, Ortiz 4 for 5 with a run scored and three RBI, Hibiki Suzuki 2 for 3, Park 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI and Ben Martinez had two RBI.

Laguna Beach 6, Northwood 0
