Boys basketball

ORANGE COAST LEAGUE

Costa Mesa 83, Santa Ana 78 (OT): The league-leading Mustangs (14-11, 8-1) survived a serious challenge from Santa Ana to capture a win Wednesday. Kembe Howerton had a season high 29 points and Marlee Slone added 26 points to lead Costa Mesa. Santa Ana (8-13, 2-5) was led by Jack Rivera, who had 38 points and six-pointers and Osten Achmad 20 points.

St. Margaret’s 78, Calvary Chapel 69: Cameron Danz had 19 points and Russell Frye 14 points for St. Margaret’s. Ben Devries had 18 points for Calvary Chapel.

SURF LEAGUE

Newport Harbor 73, Laguna Beach 68: Dash Bastedo had 18 points, Gavin Guy 18 points and six 3-pointers on senior night for Newport Beach.

Los Alamitos 75, Corona del Mar 74

PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE

Northwood 53, Irvine 39: The Timberwolves (19-6, 6-1) wrapped up the seven game league schedule with a win at Irvine. The teams finish league play with a tournament next week. TJ Navarro scored 10 points, Ryan Abaye had nine points and Sidd Raj and Justin Liu eight points each for the Timberwolves.

Irvine (14-13, 4-3) was led by Ali Dal, who had 15 points; Cooper Stearns who had 12 points, 15 rebounds and three assists and Archit Raul, who had 10 points and three rebounds.

Beckman 79, University 67: The Patriots won on senior night. The game was tied 36-36 at halftime. Caydon Do had 32 points and neared 900 career points for Beckman along with 15 rebounds. Tai Nguyen had 14 points, all in the second half. Qusai Azem had 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. University was led by Christian DeBarge, who had 23 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Andrew Bogard had 16 points, three 3-pointers, eight rebounds and three blocks. Shervin Moarrefian had 13 points and Savion Ruth 11 points , seven rebounds and three assists.

“It was a great night to celebrate our six seniors (Caydon Do, Jahan Jafari, Isaac Liu, Tai Nguyen and Iziah Valenzuela),” said Beckman Coach Lucas Armstrong. “It was a great atmosphere and the crowd rallied behind us. We had an extremely strong third quarter which really turned the momentum in our favor.

“The quarter was highlighted with a huge alley oop dunk by Iziah Valenzuela on a perfect pass from Cayden Do. We got great contributions from our bench tonight. It was a good all around team effort. Caydon Do’s effort was superb with 32 points and 15 rebounds.”

Portola 56, Woodbridge 55

GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE

Rancho Alamitos 61, Los Amigos 59: The Vaqueros defeated league-leading Los Amigos (6-1). Luis Rico had seven 3-pointers making it 24 3-pointers made in the last three games. Senior Henry Phan added 22 points for Rancho Alamitos (4-3). Freshman Ozzy Ramos had 17 rebounds for Rancho Alamitos.

EMPIRE LEAGUE

Cypress 73. Valencia 49: League-leading Cypress was led by Ryan Gov, who had 14 points; Michael Wright, who had 10 points and 12 rebounds and King Birdsong, who had nine points and three 3-pointers.

Crean Lutheran 73, Pacifica 48: The Saints remained one game back of league leading Cypress with the win. Kaiden Bailey had 27 points and Troy Jenkins 11 points to lead the Saints (13-11, 6-1).

Tustin 61, Kennedy 39: Tustin (15-10, 4-3) was led by Taven Epps, who had 20 points and and five rebounds; Carson Jue 12, who had 12 points and Johnny Villagrana, who had 10 points.

TRINITY LEAGUE

JSerra 68, Mater Dei 62: The Lions (20-4, 4-3) notched their first victory over Mater Dei in program history Wednesday night at JSerra. Aidan Fowler led the Lions with 36 points. Sebastian Rancik had 13 points and Korin Hull 12 points. League-leading Mater Dei (22-2, 6-1) was led by Brannon Martinsen who had 24 points and Scotty Belnap who had 16 points.

Santa Margarita 47, Orange Lutheran 37: Santa Margarita was led by Cameron McNamee who had 15 points and Dallas Washington, who had nine points and 10 rebounds. DeMarco Johnson had seven points and six rebounds and Brayden Kyman seven points.

Girls basketball

PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE

Portola 52, Woodbridge 39: Portola (20-4, 2-1) was led by Nina Saiki with 17 points. Kalynne Abraham-Mendez had 14 points and Kira Watanabe 11 points. Woodbridge was led by Tegan Burrus with 17 points and Hana Watanabe with 10 points.

Beckman 81, University 46: The Patriots were led by Taylor Tam, who had 18 points and four 3-pointers. Alexa Gallegos had 15 points, Natasha Jafari 14 points and Mika Sakeda 13 points. Selin Hatyoglu led University with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists while Annie Tran had eight points and three assists.
