St. John Bosco turned away a late challenge by Mater Dei to defeat the defending CIF champions 24-22 Friday night at the Rose Bowl in the CIF Division 1 championship.

The Braves snapped Mater Dei’s 29-game winning streak and advance into the state open division championship game in two weeks.
The two teams were tied 7-7 at halftime. St. John Bosco tied the game on a touchdown pass from Pierce Clarkson to Jahlil McClain in the second quarter. Mater Dei scored first when quarterback Elijah Brown connected with Marcus Harris on a TD catch in the first quarter.
St. John Bosco held a 21-13 lead going into the fourth quarter.
