Long-time Corona del Mar High School boys basketball coach Ryan Schachter has resigned after 15 seasons, Schachter and CdM Athletic Director Dennis Wilbanks said Monday.
“I just felt it was time to step away,” Schachter said Monday night in a text to OC Sports Zone.
CdM assistant coach Jason Simco has been named the new coach, Wilbanks said.
Schachter led CdM to eight league titles, one CIF championship and one CIF runner-up finish.
“I have resigned for personal reasons,” Schachter said Tuesday. “I do not see this being the end of my coaching journey, but during COVID there were so many things to reflect on and think about. I really wanted to spend more time with my family and make sure I was where I really wanted to be.
“After 15 years of investing so much passion, love and time into the CdM basketball community; I wasn’t sure if I still had the same energy in year 15 as I did in year one and if I didn’t, it was time to step aside.
“Through all the wins, losses and championships; what I will miss the most will be the amazing relationships I have developed with the players and many of their families. CdM truly is a unique place, and I was blessed to have so much support and love from the community.”
Wilbanks praised Schachter’s efforts Tuesday.
“Although we are saddened by his departure we will be forever thankful for the time and sacrifice he has made to our student-athletes, our basketball team and our school,” Wilbanks said.
“Jason Simco has been a head coach at Estancia High School before becoming a long-time assistant to Coach Schachter at CdM. He is familiar with the players and is a teacher on campus.”
