OC Sports Zone: Community First

It was an exciting, sports-filled weekend in OC and we have many more stories to tell

OC Sports Zone, a free website, marks four years of publication.

It was another busy weekend in Orange County sports, like many since OC Sports Zone launched as a free website on July 18, 2018. We’re celebrating our fourth anniversary and myself and co-founder Gabriel Calderon are very grateful for the support of our partners who have helped with funding and our readers who have consistently followed us in growing numbers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Last weekend, the OC Fair, which opened Friday, served as a backdrop for the Pony regional tournament at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa. The tournament ran smoothly which is credit to Costa Mesa Pony president Jack Morales, vice president Mark Hatfield and tournament director Keith Hafkee.

The tournament wrapped up Sunday when Long Beach defeated Costa Mesa 6-4 to capture the championship.

It was clear from a distance that those attending the fair were having fun and we can attest that the baseball fans watching the games and enjoying the concession stand at TeWinkle Park, had a blast too.

Also on Sunday, Placentia’s Bronco 12-and-under all-stars won their third game in a row at the super regionals.

Saturday, CdM’s talented quarterback David Rasor committed to play college football for UC Davis.

Orange County is a big county with lots of sports news and this is a team effort.

There are many others who deserve credit led by Gabriel Calderon, who came up with the design concept, developed strong, lasting relationships with partners, capably handles every aspect of the operation and developed our theme, “Community First.”

Two talented and dedicated people, photographer Fernando M. Donado and writer Tom Connolly have been key members of our team. We’re also grateful for photo contributions from Mark Bausman, veteran and highly heralded journalist Jim McCormack (who also provides stories) and Jim Tomlin.

Our operation is unique in that we rely heavily on contributions from the community; we encourage you to continue to help us out in that regard as we move ahead with our fifth year.

When we started, we didn’t know what to expect and we’re still learning what our readers want, but now we’re convinced more than ever that is a tremendous opportunity that we are blessed every day to have.

Thank you for your support of OC Sports Zone! There are a lot more stories to tell.
