Irvine High School’s softball team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the CIF Division 5 playoffs with an 8-4 victory over Highland in the second round Monday in Palmdale.
Coach Jim Knapp’s Vaqueros (10-16 overall) will host JW North Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. with the winner moving on to the semifinals on Saturday. The finals are Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31 at Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine.
The second round game was moved from Saturday to Monday and Irvine responded well from the start, jumping out to an 8-0 lead behind a solo home run by freshman Jocy Knerr and a grand slam by junior Harper Vandermolen, according to Knapp.
Sophomore Midori DeLosSantos pitched a complete game, giving up four runs in the sixth inning but settled down retiring Highland (18-9) in order in the seventh.
Irvine, the No. 3 team from the Pacific Coast League, opened the playoffs with an 11-0 victory over Flintridge Sacred Heart.
