Huntington Beach High School’s boys basketball team, coached by Tino Zaragoza, captured the championship of the Ed Prange Memorial Classic, defeating Sunny Hills 70-60 in the finals Saturday at Loara.
“It was a great hard fought championship game vs Sunny Hills, who in my opinion have one of the best coaches in the county in coach Joe Ok,” Zaragoza said.
The Oilers (9-3) rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to notch the win against Sunny Hills (10-3), which reached the finals of a tournament for the second time this year.
The Oilers’ Oliver Nakra scored 31 points in the championship game and was named the tournament MVP. Kai Kabistre of Huntington Beach had 16 points and was named all-tournament along with teammates Aden Jones and Logan Barker.
Kamron Tonga and Kingsley Ashley led Sunny Hills with 12 points each. Nathan Sanchez added 11 points. Sanchez and Tonga were named to the all-tournament team.
Huntington Beach meets La Habra on Monday. Sunny Hills faces Sonora Thursday.
