Godinez High School’s girls volleyball team made the most of its first appearance in the CIF playoffs in almost 10 years with a four-set victory over Newport Christian Thursday night in a Division 8 opener.
It was the program’s first CIF playoff victory in school history, according to Athletic Director Bill Snyder.
The Grizzlies, who finished third in the Golden West League, move on to face Miliken Community School Monday at 6 p.m. at Godinez.
“Thursday night was a special one for our entire athletic program at Godinez Fundamental High School,” said Coach Jenevieve Nixon. “Our varsity girls volleyball team defeated Newport Christian School three games to one to advance to the second round of the CIF Division 8 playoffs.
“This is our first win in CIF play in school history following our first appearance in the playoffs since 2013.”
Godinez (19-10 overall) was led by senior co-captain outside hitter Rosalinda Acevedo, senior middle blocker Alexandra Torres and senior setter Priscilla Mendoza.
Acevedo had eight kills and 17 digs, Torres recorded five aces and four kills and Mendoza had five aces, 26 assists and 16 digs.
