Godinez High School’s football team, coached by Aron Kaye, opened the season Thursday night with a 10-3 non-league victory over Loara at Glover Stadium.
Henry Vega had 10 carries for 72 yards, Pedro Martinez nine carries for 42 yards and Alexis Jimenez 12 carries for 57 yards to lead the Grizzlies rushing attack.
The top receiver was Juan Memije, who had three catches for 39 yards.
Godinez quarterback Damien Arreola completed 7 of 12 passes for 60 yards.
Arreola had a TD on a 4-yard option in third quarter and Ethan Becerra kicked a 35-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the Grizzlies.
“We were really pleased with our effort and intensity level throughout the game,” Kaye said. “With that being said, we were probably a little nervous in the first half, especially on offense, but did a really nice job of settling down and just going to work in the second half. Â
“Our defense made several key plays, including holding Loara to a field goal after a long punt return gave them the ball on our five.
“Led by linebackers Chris Villalobos and Alexis Jimenez (interception), they played very hard and flew to the ball all night. Loara is young, but they are physical and well coached and they really battled. Give them a little time and they are going to be extremely competitive.”
Godinez hosts La Quinta next Friday while Loara plays at Pioneer.
