The Fury from AYSO Region 85 (Lake Forest) girls under-14 Extra soccer team coached by Coach Kelly May captured the title at the AYSO Western States Championships last Sunday.
The tournament featured top AYSO Extra teams qualifying from California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. On tournament day the Fury earned a berth to the final with a 2-0 win over North Valley AYSO.
The Fury then moved on to face Moreno Valley AYSO in the championship game. Lake Forest scored early, but Moreno Valley answered with a goal. The match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. In overtime, Moreno Valley got a goal, but later committed a foul in the penalty area with just minutes to go.
The Fury was able to capitalize on that opportunity, scoring on the penalty kick to tie the game. The Fury secured the victory by winning in penalty kicks.
“Early last fall, we started to think that maybe we could qualify for the Western States Championship, and we decided to work toward that goal. We qualified, and then these girls just played their hearts out for each other, and we accomplished so much more than we dreamed,” said the team’s coach Kelly May.
