The 2021 Tustin Classic wraps up Thursday, Dec. 30 at Tustin High School.
Los Alamitos faces Chaparral at 6 p.m. in the championship game of the boys basketball tournament.
Chaparral advanced with a 52-46 victory over Laguna Beach Wednesday night in one semifinal. The second semifinal between San Clemente and Los Alamitos was cancelled when San Clemente had to withdraw from the tournament due to COVID protocol, according to Tritons Coach Marc Popovich.
Maur Tablada scored 18 points and Tyler Brown 12 points to lead Chaparral. Laguna Beach was led by Kai Gillies with 14 points and Aiden Del Col with 11 points. Del Col made three 3-pointers in the final quarter to help the Breakers get back into the game.
Chaparral (11-2) had a 15 point lead in the third quarter before Laguna Beach rallied and cut the lead to three points with 14 seconds left.
But Chaparral was able to hold on.
“I thought we hung with them and the kids had a good effort,” said Laguna Beach Coach Bret Fleming. “We didn’t really pay attention to the game plan early, in the middle and the end. Aiden hit a couple big shots. There was just not a big margin for error.
“I thought we made some mistakes that we couldn’t really afford to make. They have some talent and they made some shots.”
It was the final game of the tournament for Laguna Beach.
