OC Sports Zone: Community First

Cypress, Edison, Tesoro, Crean Lutheran, Servite, St. Margaret’s and CVC boys teams win

CYPRESS 62, LA HABRA 53: Cypress won its first game of the year Thursday in the Sonora Tournament.

“Winning that first has been a long time coming,” said Cypress Coach Derek Mitchell. “We’ve been down by single digits in the fourth quarter in all our losses and haven’t been able to close out games. It’s been a learning curve for our guys and it doesn’t get any easier tomorrow when we play Coach (Nate) Harrison and Canyon.

“They have one of the top teams in the county. La Habra can really shoot it as they made nine threes tonight. Coach (Aaron) Riekenberg does a great job putting them in the right spots and their zone is tough to match up against.”

Cypress (1-4) was led by Kody Papke, who scored 19 points. Devon Washington and Mickey Kadawaki scored 10 points each. Jonah Kim had 10 points and three 3-pointers for the Centurions.
