Cypress High’s boys basketball team opened the CIF Division 1 playoffs defeating Orange Lutheran 61-48 Wednesday night at Cypress.
Cypress led the entire game. Eddie Spencer led Cypress with 21 points and three 3-pointers.
Elijah Vaielua had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Kody Papke had 11 points and five steals.
“Christian Chai’s impact defensively was huge for us as took on the challenge of trying to guard (a top player) for Orange Lutheran,” said Cypress Coach Derek Mitchell.
Cypress (24-5) is on the road Friday to face No. 1 seeded Windward.
Santa Ana 64, Gabrielino 58: The Saints (15-12) were led by junior Kristan Soto, who had 14 points; sophomore Deaven Perez who had 18 points and four 3-pointers and sophomore Xavier Valdovinos, who had 17 points and two 3-pointers in the 5AA playoff opener on the road The Saints face Arrowhead Christian on the road Friday in the second round.
Yorba Linda 58, Rialto 52: The Mustangs (17-12) were led by Luke Ishikawa, who had 14 points, Chance Sandoval and Cory Knutson with 11 points each and Connor Platt with 10 points in the CIF 3A opener.
Crean Lutheran 66, Diamond Bar 53: The Saints (18-10) were led by Josh Shin and Mike Birket who each had 16 points in the 2A opener.
Pacifica Christian 76, El Toro 47: The Tritons (21-7) advance into the second round of the 2A playoffs. Houston Mallette had 16 points and six rebounds, Riyaan Jiwani had 15 points, Judah Brown had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Charles Erving 14 points for Pacifica Christian.
Roosevelt 56, Newport Harbor 44: The Sailors (22-7) losat their opening round 2AA playoff game. Ryan Miller led the Sailors with 19 points and Levi Darrow added 10 points.
Kennedy 63, Savanna 40: The Fighting Irish (15-11) advanced into the second round of the CIF 4A playoffs using great defense and solid perimeter shooting early. Kennedy moves on to face Oakwood Friday night in the second round.
Flintridge 64, Century 56: The Centurions (19-8) were upset at home in the 4AA opener. Eduardo Sorto scored 17 points and Rodrigo Ramiriez added 16 points for Century, the Orange League champion. Flintridge Prep (13-13) moves on to the second round.
St. Bernard 84, Beckman 56: Beckman, which finished second in the Pacific Coast League, was led by Dowon Kim with 13 points and David Manea in the 2AA playoff opener. Coach John Goin’s Beckman team finished 14-13 overall.
