The Centurions played power house Long Beach Poly Saturday in the semifinals of the prestigious Lakewood-Molten Volleyball tournament, a massive endeavor played over nine days at four high schools.
The Centurions, five-time Empire champion, led in the match after winning the first two sets, 25-20, 25-22, before Poly’s depth wore them down and took the final three sets, 25-17, 25-16 and 15-12 in a long, steamy and very entertaining match that could have been regarded as the tournament’s championship game.
The Centurions came back later Saturday to defeat Long Beach Wilson 3-1 while Poly handled La Salle Prep of Pasadena 3-1 to win the title.
