Cypress High School’s girls basketball team pulled off a dramatic overtime 54-50 victory Friday night over El Modena in a North Hills League game at Cypress.
The win secured the league title for the Centurions (15-12, 7-0) who extended their winning streak to seven games. Cypress finishes up the regular season with a game at Foothill on Tuesday.
Hayley Walker led the Centurions with 19 points, Sarina Ulep-Rodriguez added 14 points and Kailey Tilson had eight points.
Cypress led 31-29 at halftime.
El Modena junior guard Sienna Gamez, under tremendous pressure in front of a capacity crowd, sank two free throws with no time left on the clock in regulation to tie the game at 47-47 and send it into overtime.
El Modena then took a 50-47 lead in the extra period following Gamez’s free throw with 2:39 remaining. However, the Centurions countered with a 7-0 run, led by Ulep Rodriguez’s two clutch baskets, to end the game.
El Modena’s senior point guard Amira Tomizh, led all scorers with 23 points and Gamez added 11 points. El Modena, currently in fourth place in league, finishes up league play on Tuesday with a game at La Habra and then on Wednesday wraps up the regulation season with a non-league home game with Katella.
