Capistrano Valley Christian’s football team had a sparkling debut in its season opener Thursday night.
The Eagles, behind sophomore quarterback Nate Richie and a stingy defense, defeated Calvary Chapel 42-9 in a nonleague game at Segerstrom.
“I’m proud of our guys, it’s the first game of the year for us and you never really know what you got until you go out and there and play, they had a game already and we didn’t have a zero week,” said Eagles Coach Eric Preszler. “I like the start, I’m sure we’re going to find some things we need to improve on but it’s an encouraging way to kick off the season.”

Richie completed 10 of 15 passes for 219 yards and four touchdowns to lead the offense. Receiver Max Krosky had three catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
“He’s only a sophomore, he played for us last year as a freshman,” Preszler said of Richie. “He can flat out spin it. He’s young as far as his football experience, but not in his IQ. He’a special kid and we have Hayden Carlson who comes in and plays a little quarterback once in a while too so that give us some flexibility.”
CVC was also tough on defense with four interceptions, two by Heath Carlson and one each by Hayden Carlson and Jack Maguire.
“Our defense played lights out, they’re a good offense and their quarterback (Matt Stevens) is special. I’m proud of our guys and we had a lot of dudes rotating in, a lot of guys were cramping up and it was next man up, ” Preszler said.
CVC took control on its first drive capped by a 3-yard TD run by JP Synnott. Later in the quarter, Richie connected with Krosky on a 28-yard TD play to put CVC ahead 14-0.
Synnott scored on a 5-yard TD run to give CVC a 21-0 lead after one quarter.
CVC continued to dominate in the second quarter. Richie threw a 58-yard TD pass to Hayden Carlson and a 16-yard TD pass to Maguire to put CVC ahead 35-0 ahead late in the first half.
CVC fumbled the ball deep in its own territory and recovered in the end zone giving Calvary Chapel a safety late in the second quarter to break the shutout.
Richie hooked up with Krosky on a 27-yard TD catch in the third quarter to make it 42-2.
Calvary Chapel (1-1) continued to battle and quarterback Matthew Peters scored on a 20-yard TD run to put the home team on the board again. Peters was Calvary’s leading rusher with 126 yards.
“We’re really young but I didn’t get our guys prepared enough,” said Calvary Chapel Coach Jack McInally. “Shoutout to Coach Preszler and all of CVC. They really came out and played really, really well. We’re just going to take a look at ourselves. We just got to play better and be better prepared next week against Bellflower.
“They just came out really fired up and we came out lackadaisical, we’re young, we have three seniors. We will bounce back.”
McInally was pleased to see the Eagles get the touchdown on the final drive.
“Matt Peters is a fighter, that’s the reason he’s the quarterback,” McInally said. He’s the typical quarterback. He’s the guy you want leading your team, you want him in the fourth quarter. He’s only a sophomore, he’s never played quarterback before and he’s going to get better and I’m going to get him in a better position next week.”
Charles Sparks also rushed for 29 yards for Calvary Chapel.
