CIF Southern Section approves plan to move boys volleyball to second season

CIF Southern Section officials announced Friday that boys volleyball will be held in season two if possible between March and June after surveying member schools.

A tentative starting date has not been determined. Boys volleyball has been played in the spring, but under a new plan was moved to season one.

The decision comes after the CIF State office moved the sport from the first season to the second season. CIF sports would have to meet requirements for certain tiers to play under a plan released Monday by the California Department of Public Health.

“As you know, on Dec. 1, the CIF State office made the decision to move the CIF Southern Regional Boys Volleyball Championships from the fall season to the spring season for the 2020-2021 school year,” CIF Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod said in a statement to athletic directors and coaches and shared with the media.

“As the Southern Section, we had the option to follow that decision and move our season of sport from the fall to spring or keep boys volleyball in the fall Season as originally planned. Therefore, in our effort to make the most informed decision possible, over the past two weeks we conducted a survey of Southern Section member schools to gain input on whether you would like to keep the boys volleyball season in the fall or move it to the Spring.

“The survey was sent to 362 member high schools who have boys volleyball programs and a total of 304 responded. 207 schools supported the move of boys volleyball to the spring and 97 schools supported having boys volleyball remain in the fall. Those numbers indicate a clear mandate from our member schools, 68.5 percent to 31.5 percent, to move boys volleyball to the spring and so we will do so.

“The CIF State Office will be announcing the dates of the CIF Boys Volleyball Regional Championships in early January so at this time we do not know the exact dates for the boys volleyball season in the spring. However,
once the CIF State Office determines the dates for the CIF Southern Regional Boys Volleyball Championships, we will release our Southern Section schedule.”
