Crean Lutheran removed from CIF softball playoffs for rule violation

Crean Lutheran High School’s softball team, which was scheduled to advance into the semifinals of the CIF Division 7 playoffs Saturday, was removed from the playoffs Friday for violating section by-laws regarding batting practice before games, CIF officials said in a release.

“Due to this violation Crean Lutheran will forfeit their win. Tahquitz, will now advance to the next round of the playoffs vs. Ganesha High School,” CIF officials said in a statement.

According to CIF officials, the decision was based on the CIF-SS Bluebook Bylaw 2713.2 that states: “2713.2 teams entered in the softball playoffs will not be permitted to take batting practice on the day of a playoff game prior to the commencement of the contest or during the contest.”

“We have been removed from the playoffs,” Crean Lutheran Athletic Director Eric Olson told OC Sports Zone Friday.

“After discussion with CIF about the pre-game mistake, Crean Lutheran High School forfeited the game and withdrew from the playoffs,” added Jeffrey Beavers, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Crean Lutheran.  “It was the right thing to do. Difficult for the coach, and especially the girls, but the right thing to do.”

Crean Lutheran officials met with the players and coaches on Friday morning to discuss the ruling. Olson said players reflected on the successful season for the team, which finished 14-11-1.

Crean Lutheran defeated Tahquitz 8-3 in the quarterfinals Thursday at Crean Lutheran. But the game will go down as a forfeit loss.

CIF officials said they would have no further comment.
