Corona del Mar’s baseball team defeated Newport Harbor 20-8 Tuesday in the first game of the Battle of the Bay Series and clinched the Sunset Wave League championship, according to Sea Kings coach Kevin McCaffrey.
CdM improved its record to 16-5 overall and 6-1 in league play. The two teams will meet again on Thursday at CdM for game two of their series.
Senior Keller Strauss (5-1) got the win pitching four innings allowing only one run and striking out five.
CdM belted five home runs. Ryan Zimmerman got the scoring going in the second inning by hitting a three-run home run. Nico DiFerdinando followed that with a solo home run to left field to make it 4-0. Charlie Mannon led the way with two home runs and six RBI. Blake Butcher also hit a home run for CDM.
“I am so proud of the boys,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey. “They have been working so hard all year and really bought into the process. Their hard work paid off this afternoon and it was fun to watch them celebrate. All 15 guys on our team contributed today. Winning a league championship is so special and it is something they will always remember. I can’t express how happy I am for the boys.”
