Corona del Mar’s baseball team beat Newport Harbor 8-1 in the Battle of the Bay Sunset Wave League game Wednesday at CdM.
Brycen Hill (4-2) threw a complete game to record the win. Max Lane got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning by hitting a two-run home run. Dennis Fitzpatrick then belted a two-run double to make it 4-0 after the first inning.
The Sea Kings (8-6, 2-0) pounded out 11 hits. Max Lane, Charlie Mannon, Dennis Fitzpatrick, and Van Sidebotham all had two hits.
“I am really happy for our guys,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey. “The boys played a clean game and really battled at the plate to put pressure on Newport. Brycen Hill was outstanding on the mound for us. Jack Salmon made an outstanding play to throw a runner out at the plate in the top of the first inning.
“That momentum carried over to the bottom of the first as Max Lane hit a huge home run for us. Dennis Fitzpatrick had two clutch hits for us and had three RBI on the day. It was a fun day and a wonderful atmosphere for a high school baseball game.”
Newport Harbor (9-5, 0-2) was led by Trent Liolios who was 1 for 3 with a home run.
