Corona del Mar’s baseball team moved into second place in the Sunset Wave league with a 6-0 victory over Laguna Beach Tuesday afternoon in Laguna Beach.
The Sea Kings had 11 hits led by Blake Butcher who was 3 for 4 with three RBI. Reece Berger was 2 for 3 with two RBI.
Nolan Dunn also contributed going 2-for-2 with a walk. Tom Wilcox (3-2) got the victory on the mound going five innings allowing three hits and striking out six.
Ryan Borquez threw two scoreless innings to close out the game.
CdM improved its mark to 17-8-1 overall and 4-4 in league play.
The Sea Kings and Breakers (15-12, 3-5) will meet again on Thursday for the final game of the regular season.
“I thought our kids had some great at bats early in the game,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey. “Scoring three runs in the first inning really set the tone. Blake Butcher and Luke Joyce each had big two out hits to score runs. Tom was really good on the mound today.
“He was able to work out of trouble early and then did a great job of pitching with a lead. We are excited to play for second place on Thursday. Making the CIF playoffs in the Sunset league was one of our goals and we have a chance to achieve that with a victory on Thursday.”
