Capistrano Valley’s boys basketball team broke open a close game at halftime with a big third quarter run and went on to defeat La Habra 70-33 in the final game of the North-South Challenge at Tesoro Saturday night.
Capo Valley (11-1) led 21-16 at halftime, but went on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter. The Cougars outscored La Habra 21-5 in the third quarter to break the game open.
“After we figured out who they were, we got a lot better defensively,” said Capo Valley Coach Brian Mulligan. “We were guarding the wrong guys early and that allowed them to kind of hang around and we weren’t finding the proper gaps against the zone and we did that and got better too. My guys are very, very coachable.”:
Leading the way was junior guard Langston Redfield, who had 11 points, nine coming in the first half. Redfield was named the game’s MVP.
“He was pretty good, I want to say he had four blocks besides the other stats that he had that were pretty good too,” Mulligan said. “He kind of makes us go.”
Capo Valley had four players in double figures, including Spencer Egbert, who had 15 points and three 3-pointers, all in the second half. Te 6-7 Egbert arrived late because of car problems, Mulligan said and started the second half.
“He helps a whole lot,” Mulligan said of Egbert.
Brody Sumner added 14 points and Connor Gleason 10 points for the Cougars.
Mulligan said he is excited about his squad, ranked third in the county by the Orange County Register.
“I have two point guards, and you always struggle to have one that you really like and I’ve got two in Langston and Connor and it’s a blessing and I’ve got a few guys who can shoot it and a couple of bigs who can play, so it’s a pretty well rounded team,” he said.
La Habra (7-6) was led by Erik Howlin with 14 points and Chris Fowler with 13 points.
