Big late rally lifts Beckman past Portola 8-6; Villa Park and Trabuco Hills also win

BECKMAN 8, PORTOLA 6: Beckman High’s baseball team overcame a late three-run deficit to defeat Portola in a Pacific Coast League game at Portola Friday afternoon.

Paul Murrow was 3 for 4 with two home runs, five RBI and the go-ahead single for the Patriots with two strikes and two outs in the top of the seventh inning, according to Beckman Coach Kevin Lavalle.

Zach Ireland (4-0) threw 6 2/3 innings and struck out seven for Beckman.

“Portola outplayed us in every facet of the game besides the final score,” said Lavalle. “Paul obviously had a big day, and I give my guys credit for coming back. It was a huge win that basically kept our hope alive.”

Beckman (12-5) remains in third place in the PCL but kept its hopes alive for a league title with two games later in the month against league-leading Woodbridge. The Patriots were coming off a 4-0 loss to University on Tuesday.
