Beckman ends Uni’s 24-game league winning streak; Woodbridge and Crean Lutheran win

Woodbridge High’s girls basketball team moved into a tie for first place in the Pacific Coast League Wednesday night defeating Portola 63-48 at Woodbridge.

The Warriors are tied for first place with University, which was upset by Beckman 54-50 despite a 24-point performance by Claire Kawata. That ended the Trojans 24-game league winning streak dating back three seasons.

Woodbridge (14-8, 4-1) was led by Erika Maggard, who scored 31 points and Kathleen Wasserman, who had 15 points.

Beckman and Portola are tied for third place in the league. The two teams play Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Beckman.

Crean Lutheran 81, Pacifica 44: The Saints won the Empire League game on Tuesday night. Taylor Feldman scored 30 points, Hailee Daniel had 14 points and freshman guard Sarah Bonsangue came off the bench to score 13 points.

Coach Bianca Ziemann said Bonsangue provided “great defense and scoring power. I was super thrilled to see her break out game last night, especially when she was sick last week with the flu.”

Crean Lutheran is 19-3 overall and 4-1 in league, tied with Tustin and Cypress for the league lead. The Saints host Kennedy Friday night, then play at Tustin on Tuesday.
