Beckman High School’s football team opened the season with a 35-0 non-league victory over Santa Ana Valley Friday night at Santa Ana Valley.
But Beckman Coach Marcello Giuliano said there are areas the Patriots can get better at.
“We were obviously please to open the season with a win, but also see the areas we need to improve,” he said Coach Marcello Giuliano. “We had way too many penalties that made moving the ball much harder and we had some issues getting the defense adjusted to certain formations, but those are all fixable with focus and practice reps.
“Our offense executed really well and spread the ball around. The first unit had four ball carriers contribute, and seven different receivers catching the ball. Quarterback Noah Nam did a really good job of making good reads and distributing the ball, and Makhi and Noah Czaykowski generated some explosive plays. Next week, we can’t afford to have some of those explosives called back due to penalties, though.”

Giuliano was pleased with the defensive effort.
“Defense was solid against a physical Valley offense,” he said. “Middle linebacker Miles Park didn’t have a bunch of stats but he was a steady presence for all the new players we had out there. Kind of like on offense, the defensive production was spread across several players, which means we played within the structure of the defense and made the plays that came our way. Outside linebacker Zak Hazboun logged two tackles for loss, and defensive end Rian Silva applied a lot of pressure in the backfield.”
The Patriots are headed to Santa Barbara next weekend.
“Next week we have a big test in San Marcos of Santa Barbara,” Giuliano said. “We are spending a couple of days on the UCSB campus, so this will be a new and great experience, but it will also test our ability to get outside of our normal routine and deal with distractions. I feel that both of these teams are so similar: experienced, big up front, explosive offensive potential, that this will be a great early-season test for us to see where we’re at as a team and how we perform in close games.”
Santa Ana Valley (0-1) plays at Segerstrom Friday night.
