Beckman High School boys basketball coach John Goins said Wednesday he has resigned as head coach after six seasons. He will continue to teach English at the school.
“I need to spend time being a more present father and husband, and I cannot accomplish that along with putting in the time that I feel is required to run the program at the level that I want to and the boys deserve,” Goins said.
Goins has been at Beckman for 14 years, six as a head coach. He had a 83-77 overall record and his teams were 39-24 in league.
The Patriots advanced to the CIF playoffs the last five years and reached the second round in three of them. He led Beckman to its first league title in 2019.
Beckman was 10-18 overall and 6-6 in the Pacific Coast League. The Patriots lost to La Mirada 95-64 in the opening round of the CIF 2A playoffs.
“I want to thank Coach Goins for all of his years of service to Beckman basketball including the last six as our head coach,” said Athletic Director Steve Fischel. “He has been an excellent leader and role model for young men in the program.
“His passion, work ethic and vision have all been critical ingredients to the program’s success during his tenure.”
No replacement has been made and Goins said the opening has been posted.
