University High School varsity boys basketball coach Beau Budde said Saturday he has resigned. Budde, who is also a teacher at University, took over the Trojans program from long-time coach Mike Dinneen in 2019.
“Yes, I decided to resign from my head coaching position for personal and family matters,” Budde said Saturday in response to an inquiry from OC Sports Zone.Â
Budde said he will continue to teach at the school but offered no other details of why he stepped down as coach after his team started 3-7.
No replacement has been named by University High School officials.
University is now officially 3-9. In Thursday’s non-league game vs. Tustin, the Trojans fielded a team consisting mainly of junior varsity players. Budde did not coach the game and the Trojans were led by another coach from Uni.
Tustin (10-3) won the game 75-39.
“We had an issue with player availability for last night’s game,” Athletic Director Tom Shrake said Friday in a statement. “Fortunately, we were able to play. Tustin High School was very understanding and we are deeply appreciative of that. I don’t have any additional information to share at this time.”
It is not clear why most of the varsity players didn’t suit up for the game with Tustin.
University’s scheduled game with Aliso Niguel Saturday in the North-South Challenge at Tesoro was cancelled and Aliso Niguel was awarded a forfeit win.
University’s next scheduled game is Thursday, Jan. 2 at Capistrano Valley.
University was 8-19 overall and 2-9 in the Pacific Coast League last season.
