OC Sports Zone: Community First

Additional high school basketball games on Tuesday and Friday postponed

Orange County athletic directors on Tuesday reported additional postponements of high school basketball games this week.

UPDATES:

—Westminster Athletic Director Kyle Gorham said that the boys and girls basketball games this week have been postponed due to “COVID concerns in our programs. We will work with the other teams to reschedule; no dates as of now.”

The scheduled games were to be played Tuesday vs. Godinez and Friday against Katella.

—Cypress High’s boys basketball program announced on Twitter that the Empire League opener with Tustin on Tuesday was postponed. Tustin Coach Ringo Bossenmeyer confirmed the postponement.

“We ran into the COVID road block,” said Cypress Coach Derek Mitchell. “I got word from admin this morning that we would postponing the game. I spoke with Coach Bossenmeyer today about rescheduling. We are set for Jan. 27 back at Cypress if everything works out.

“This is a lesson about adversity for our guys. We can’t let this setback define our season. We were finally starting to gel as a team.”

—Woodbridge High’s boys basketball team has postponed two games, Tuesday’s scheduled contest with Beckman and Friday’s game with Portola. Woodbridge Athletic Director Brian Walsh said the decision was made “out of caution.”

The girls game with Beckman Tuesday and Friday’s girls game with Portola are still scheduled as planned.

Walsh added the Beckman vs. Woodbridge boys game will be rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 15.

Portola Athletic Director Peter Abe said Tuesday’s boys game with Irvine at Irvine is on as scheduled.

—Segerstrom Athletics said Tuesday’s boys basketball game with Ocean View was off. Ocean View Athletic Director Tim Walsh said the game will be made up on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Segerstrom.

—A tweet from Fountain Valley boys basketball noted that because of COVID protocol within the program games against Laguna Beach Wednesday and Edison Friday were postponed and will be rescheduled later.

—Costa Mesa’s boys basketball team posted a tweet that said due to COVID-protocol within its program games with Saddleback Wednesday and Estancia Friday have been postponed and will be rescheduled.
