It was quite a Friday night for Segerstrom’s football team.
The Jaguars defeated Artesia 54-13 to wrap up non-league play with a 6-1 record and place-kicker Natalie Castro was named the school’s homecoming queen at halftime.

“We played very well in all aspects of the game,” said Coach Joseph Tagaloa. “Offensively, Angel Vega connected with Iverson Fuiava twice for touchdowns. Our running game was punctuated with touchdown runs by Junior Lopez, Paul Roa, and Daniel Stewart.
“Our offensive line played a solid game giving Vega time to throw and our running backs lanes to run.”
Tagaloa was also impressed with the defensive effort.
“Defensively, it took all 11 guys to keep Artesia in check,” he said. “They have several athletes who have big play capability, so it was our emphasis to get all 11 guys to the ball.
“Again our defensive line anchored by Emerson Aldana and Cristian Carmona played extremely well, allowing for our linebackers to come up and make plays.
“Our special teams played was solid. Andrew Schouw returned another punt for a touchdown, giving him three on the season.”
The players and coaches were also excited when it was announcing that Castro, who was in her football uniform, had been named homecoming queen.
“Natalie wining homecoming queen was awesome,” Tagaloa said. “We allowed her to take part in the half-time festivities while the rest of the team went over adjustments for the second half. When she returned to the locker room she was greeted by a big round of applause and cheers from her football brothers. Everyone was excited to see her win.”
