Tustin Unified School District officials announced Thursday night the district will transition to phase one of restarting athletics programs, including football on Monday, June 15 for Foothill and Tustin high schools and Monday, June 22 for Beckman.
Athletic camps will be able to begin under a number of guidelines, according to Mark Eliot, director of communications and public information for the district. Players must be in groups of 10 or less within the confines of the camp and must be separated from others groups in the camp.
High school athletics have been shut down since March because of the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement of the camps starting is a step toward preparing for the fall athletic season, although no timetable has been set for opening games for football or other sports.
The guideleines include maintaining a social distance of six feet at all times.
In addition, no equipment will be shared and no equipment will be touched by more than one player without cleaning.
Eliot added entry and exit proticols will be established and monitored by coaches so students do not gather and coaches will stagger times to space out student groups.
Coaches will also make sure that athletes stay hydrated with personal water bottles and cups that are never shared, Eliot added. In addition, coaches will check temperatures of athletes upon their arrival to practice and the staff will use non-touch thermometers.
